Sullivan County SPCA wins 1st Place at
Sullivan Renaissance 2008 Awards Ceremony
In March 2008, we were grateful to learn that the Sullivan Renaissance,
a group committed to aiding in the beautification and community
development of Sullivan County, awarded us a $1,000 grant to go
towards improving the appearance of the shelter's exterior and
landscaping. We completed our project with the additional help of local
vendors who contributed valuable supplies and labor. Then, in a recent
ceremony we were thrilled to learn that our project had won 1st place
in the 2008 contest judging all of the grant recipients in Category A
(projects made up of single elements such as a new sign or
landscaping!). We were then awarded another $3,000 prize for
additional beautification and projects!
Hundreds of people attended the 90-minute Sullivan Renaissance
Awards Ceremony on August 11, 2008, at Bethel Woods Center for the
Arts as winning projects from around the county were announced.
Volunteers had been hard at work on 46 community projects since initial
grants were awarded in March.
Sullivan Renaissance projects were judged for aesthetic improvement,
collaboration, youth involvement, permanence and an ability to be
maintained. The team of 11 judges from outside Sullivan County was
headed by Ted Blowes, chairman of the Board of Directors of the
National Communities in Bloom Program in Canada, which helped inspire
the Sullivan Renaissance program. Other judges were: Birgitta Brophy,
Nicola Coddington, Nicole Franzese, Manna Jo Greene, Mary Lewis, Mike
Pogue, Karen Schneller-McDonald, Tim Stoddard, Deborah Sweeton, and
Michael Sweeton.
Our sincere thanks goes out to Sullivan Renaissance and everyone
who contributed to this project. WE ARE SULLIVAN PROUD!
